aitu fafine

December 13th 1890

I took the round top of a small meat cask and painted upon it a hideous head with great eyes and a wide, open mouth displaying a double row of pointed teeth. Instead of hair, flames radiate out from the head. These flames, the iris of the eyes, and the pointed teeth I have painted in luminous paint. It almost frightens me. The aitu fafine, I may add, has red hair that rises from her head very high, and a beautiful figure.
