A vivid discussion of Kilburn, the area of north-west London where she lived, demonstrated how it was impossible to understand the district “without bringing into play half the world and a considerable amount of British imperialist history”. Her account of walking down the Kilburn High Road, talking to her newsagent during the Gulf war of 1991 – “silently chafing at having to sell the Sun” – brought these connections to life. The piece also challenged the then predominant view on the left that a politics of place was necessarily nostalgic or inward looking. doreen massey

You can get a "case" for passing kites. Usually a kite was passed from one inmate to another via one or more inmates. For instance, a male inmate would put a kite on his leftover food tray and the inmate who would pick up the trays would then find a way to get it to an inmate in another tank or cell. Sometimes sent to a woman on the entire other side of the jail.

(manuscript note at the top of the final proofs of Prisoner of Love)
Put all the images in language in a place of
safety and make use of them, for they are in the
desert, and it’s in the desert we must go
and look for them.
Jean Genet
The penal colony is fixed in the middle of a desert: a desert of stones rather than sand: an immense plain, burned by the sun. No plants grow. The camera must photograph these stones with precision, showing their glittering surfaces which contain mica. The penal colony needs to be shown as existing at the centre of an aridity that is perfect, mineral and crystallized… Time there is always the same. It never rains. Unless I decide to mention them, there are never storms. And no animals, except for flies: at certain moments, they form thick excessive black clouds.
