ARGUMENT.—Dante, at the desire of Virgil,
proceeds onward to the bridge that crosses the tenth gulf, from whence
he hears the cries of the alchemists and forgers, who are tormented
therein; but not being able to discern anything on account of the
darkness, they descend the rock, that bounds this, the last of the
compartments in which the eighth circle is divided, and then behold the
spirits who are afflicted by divers plagues and diseases. Two of them,
namely, Grifolino of Arezzo, and Capocchio of Siena, are introduced
speaking. | | | | | | | | | | | | |

Menocchio said: "I have said that, in my opinion, all was chaos, that
is, earth, air, water, and fire were mixed together; and out of that
bulk a mass formed – just as cheese is made out of milk – and worms
appeared in it, and these were the angels.
